Birkenhead sits on the North Shore of the Waitematā Harbour, about four kilometres northwest of Auckland's city centre.

The area has been settled by Tāmaki Māori since at least the 14th century; European settlers arrived in the 1840s, and in 1884 the Chelsea Sugar Refinery was built on the foreshore — it still works the waterfront today.

Once a semi-rural borough of strawberry fields, Birkenhead grew into suburban Auckland after the Harbour Bridge opened in 1959.
